The international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an independent intergovernmental, science and technology-based organization related to the UN system that serves as the global focal point for nuclear cooperation. Established n 1957 as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organization, the IAEA was created in order to address both the safety concerns and the technological expectations associated with nuclear material. Even though the Agency's decisions are made through its own policy making bodies, it submits periodic reports to the UN General Assembly and in certain cases, to the Security Council. The IAEA is now formed by 151 Member States and a 35-member Board of Governors.
The IAEA holds the mission of developing nuclear safety standards, promoting the use of nuclear material and facilities for peaceful purposes, and supervising the safe application of nuclear energy. In this way, the IAEA works for the sustainable use and management of natural resources and the optimization of the environmental impact of nuclear technology, as well as in the implementation of protective measures against ionizing radiation. Nevertheless, the IAEA has also a firm commitment to development, facilitating the transfer of nuclear technology and knowledge to its Member States
Topic A. Measures and technological advances to prevent famine Global food security crisis has rapidly risen global food prices tat are having significant negative socioeconomic impacts and political implications in all regions of the world. Because of this alarming situation, the Member States must recognize the necessity to raise agricultural productivity and sustainability through the development and integrated application of nuclear science and technology. Therefore, the work of Joint Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the IAEA has been dedicated to the development and application of nuclear techniques in food and agriculture. Unfortunately, there is still an increasing food demand that is not being addressed properly. It is of urgence that the international community mitigates famine through areas of soil and water management, insect pest control, plant breeding, livestock production and food safety. | Topic B. Creation of a Nuclear-Weapon free Zone in the Middle East The proliferation of nuclear weapons in the Middle East is an issue that gravely concerns the IAEA, specially because of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the tension for a nuclear confrontation it creates. Various UN resolutions have been established in order to hold back the armed conflict and reduce the tension that could trigger a nuclear confrontation, but unfortunately, outbreaks of hostilities continue happening. The threat that nuclear proliferation represents to the international security and the environment concerns the IAEA deeply; that is why different Nuclear NON-Proliferation sessions have been held, and the creation of a NWFZ in the Middle East is strongly encourage as a step to enhance peace and security in the zone. | Mesa Mariana Quinde Presidente Berardo Mejía Moderador Rafael Trejo Oficial de Conferencias |
