DISC - Disarmament and International Security Commission

The Disarmament and International Security Commission is one of the main committees of the General Assembly. GA is one of the five principal organs of the UN. It is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. In this Committee all member nations have equal representation. The committee meets every year, after the General Assembly General Debate. All 193 member States on the UN can attend.

This commission is concerned with disarmament and related international security questions. As a part of the disarmament machinery of the United Nations, constitutes the international forum where all States are encouraged annually to express their views on disarmament questions. They discuss the uses that are contested between them and, most important, nations seek common solutions to the international conflicts. As one of the six subsidiary bodies of the General Assembly, the Disarmament and International Security Committee holds the purpose of "the maintenance of international peace and security including the principles of governing disarmament and regulation of armaments."(Article 11, UN Charter).

Topic A. United Actions towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons.

The technological advancement and the exponential growth of some States have led to a new nuclear weapons "arms race" that threatens international security. To achieve a total elimination of these weapons there must be international cooperation and an international agreement towards their elimination, specially those States that have nuclear capability and which have not stated a policy towards nuclear weapons elimination; they should be motivated to join the NPT or any other treaty that promotes the non-proliferation of nuclear devices.

Topic B. Role of Science and technology in the context of international security and disarmament.

This committee is looking forward to discuss the role of science and technology, because we acknowledge that both play an important and controversial role when talking about disarmament and international security. One of the priorities of the United Nations and the International Community is to achieve international peace. Unfortunately, a large path of technological research is still addressed to militaristic purposes. This misuse of technology continues to cause international conflicts around the world, threatening to work against the goal of international peace and disarmament that the UN has set for itself.
